New Speed Record
Several days ago, the Internet2 network set a new world record for data transfer over a transcontinental network link. An average rate of 6.25 gigabits per second was sustained on an 11,000km link from Los Angeles CA to Geneva Switzerland on April 20, 2004, resulting in a new mark of 68,431 terabit-meters per second.

Next stop is a nominal 10 gigabits per second throughput.
