Holographic Memory
NTT has developed a disposable holographic ROM module that they call Info-MICA.

The module is very compact, has a very high memory density, with low energy consumption. It can hold 1GB at present, with plans to increase that to 10GB.
NTT foresees 3 main applications for Info-MICA:
1. Replacement of semiconductor ROM because Info-MICA is small in size and inexpensive and has high capacity. A widespread use is expected in electronic dictionary sector where higher data storage capacity is required to accommodate many volumes of dictionaries.
2. Replacement of paper products used for information distribution. Ease of distribution and excellent recyclability will be favored in this application where relevant information needs to be distributed to the users. The Info-MICA media can be included in magazines and merchandise, or it can be distributed alone as a ticket or coupon.
3. Games, music, movies and electronic publications. This is based on the product’s characteristics such as difficulty of copying and high storage capacity
The Info-MICA ROM drive is also expected to find application in cellular phones and portable game machines for which the requirement for power consumption and size is strict.
