SED TV - Available mid-2007 (maybe)
SED TV has been out of the news for a while, but they’re back now. SED Inc, that appropriately-named manufacturer of TVs based on Surface-conduction Electron-emitter display technology, is showing off its wares (…ware ?) at CEATEC Japan 2006. The word is that these SED TVs should start rolling off the assembly line in July 2007.
SED displays are noteworthy because of their high image fidelity (better than LCD and Plasma), the 1ms pixel response time and their humongous contrast ratio. Pricing of SEDs is not yet set, but the recent price drops of LCD and PDP panels must be worrisome to Canon/Toshiba.
SED has been under development for some time now, and has missed a number of delivery dates, prompting wags to describe it as the best display technology that you’ll never see.

Fantastic news from Toshiba and Canon! After reaching a breakthrough in the manufacturing process, it seems they’ll be able to lower production costs.<br />

The problem appears to be that Nano-Proprietary Inc who is one of the technology patent holders, refuses to extend intellectual property rights to Toshiba, who happens to be Canon’s partner in SED Inc. Nano-Prop is suing Canon saying that Canon is in violation of their license agreement - lawsuit details available at this website (PDF alert). [...]
