PMA 2007 Camera Show Wrap-up

Olympus SP-550UZWell, PMA 07, which describes itself as the photography industry’s most important annual event, as opposed to Photokina, which seems to be the world’s largest, is drawing to an end.

The best coverage of PMA 07 is arguably from Digital Photography Review. The dpreview.com website provides a competent survey of the show, major happenings and the most interesting product announcements. They describe about 93 new-ish cameras from 14 main manufacturers and point out that most of the products have been pre-announced, some as far back as the beginning of January.

Some of the highlights of the show from Dpreview’s perspective include the professional EOS 1D mark III, the HP R837 with its ‘pet eye fix’, the Nikon D40X & the P5000, the Olympus SP-550UZ (shown above) with its 18x ultra-zoom & the Olympus 770SW which was encased in a block of ice in order to demo that it’s shockproof & waterproof, and the 2 new mock-up Sony Alpha DSLR cameras.

Generalized photog trends include more use of face detection, image stabilization and more & better Megapixels. DPR notes with some irony the attempt by Nokia to con, er convince,  show visitors that its N95 music-GPS-camera-phone can take pix as well as a real camera.
